Vazon is a beautiful wide sandy beach with the largest surf on the island, making it a hotspot for families and water sports enthusiasts, however, if you’re not feeling like a beach trip, Vazon could still be the place for you. The coastal path runs behind Vazon Bay and makes for a lovely walk from Richmond Kiosk all the way to Fort Hommet.
The walk gives you the chance to take in the beautiful views of Vazon Bay and for kids, it’s a real adventure, with lots of up and down areas, steps to jump off, walls to balance on, old WWII structures and a fort to explore.
Location
We start the walk at Richmond Kiosk, on the Vazon Coast Road, at the southern end of Vazon Bay. There are a number of parking spaces either side of the kiosk and a toilet block. Richmond Kiosk is very popular and for good reason. It offers a good selection of homemade food (the large selection of freshly baked cookies is always a winner with us!), hot and cold drinks, and reasonably priced Guernsey ice cream and the best bit…it’s open year-round.
The Footpath - From Richmond Kiosk to Vistas Cafe
What makes this route different to any other walk in Guernsey, is the large concrete section between Richmond Kiosk and Vistas Cafe (at the northern end of Vazon Beach).
The walk starts with a grassy section, which leads to a concrete walkway with steps over old WWII structures. The girls absolutely love running along the sections, jumping off the steps, climbing the walls etc and it all feels very safe (no huge drops). You will pass the Napoleonic Tower on your right and have continued beautiful views of Vazon Bay on your left. There are also a few rocky sections where there are places to park.
Vistas Cafe to Fort Hommet
At the far northern end of Vazon beach is a nature reserve, Fort Hommet and the Fort Hommet Gun Casemate Bunker, with a path leading from Vistas Cafe to the fort and bunker.
Vistas is open for breakfast, lunch and early dinner with inside and outside seating and they do take-aways so you can always grab a drink and a snack if you have hungry children!
You will come to a raised tarmac section just past Vistas, then a gravel footpath which leads you to the fort and casemate bunker, from here you get stunning views looking back over Vazon Bay.
Fort Hommet
Fort Hommet is a fortification on Vazon Bay headland, built on the site of fortifications that date back to 1680, with later additions during the Victorian Era, and bunkers and casemates that the Germans constructed during World War II. We always enjoy a trip to the fort…
Fort Hommet Gun Casemate Bunker
A fascinating chance to step inside a fully restored WWII gun casemate (a structure from which guns are fired). Open Tuesday and Saturdays 2-4:30pm from April to October. Entrance costs £3 for adults and £1.50 for children.
Return Journey
Unfortunately there isn’t a diffrent route to take back, you need to retrace your steps (that’s why we save the cafe untill the return journey!). You can obviously start and the finish the walk wherever is best for your family, and you can do the walk in either direction.
