Vale: Rock Climbing as Nature Intended

An amazing walk from Pembroke Beach to Fort Pembroke

It was such a delight to wake up Suunday morning to find the sun shining after what feels like weeks of non-stop rain.  We wanted to get some fresh air and make the most of it, but where to go? Tilly was going to a party and Lottie’s only request was to have cake, so we decided we’d look for somewhere to get cake and have a walk.

With a number of the beach cafe’s closed for winter we checked online and found that the Beach House cafe on Pembroke Beach was open. We arrived at the Pembroke Beach car park (next to the Beach House) and we couldn’t believe how full it was! We drove to the car park to the right of the cafe where there were lots of spaces to park.

Pembroke Beach

Pembroke Beach is situated at the most northern part of Guernsey and, whatever the season, it is always a delight to look at, thanks to the longest stretch of sand on the island. We had a quick peak over the sea wall before heading into the cafe and it was lovely to see so many families enjoying the beach. Lottie was excited to see so many dogs on the beach (she’s still working on her Daddy to get one!).

The Beach House was busy and thankfully we got the last table. We warmed up with hot chocolate whilst Lottie enjoyed her babyccino and piece of chocolate cake (which was so large I was happy to help her finish it!).

Beach Fun

Fully refreshed, we headed onto the beach where Lottie had great fun playing in the sand, jumping over the waves and getting us to play tag with her!

Off On An Adventure...

As we walked to the left side of Pembroke Beach, we saw people walking on the footpath beyond the beach. We could also see an old building at the end of the headland and we decided to take a look…

What a find! The views from the footpath were beautiful, looking back towards Pembroke Beach and out to sea. With benches dotted along the footpath there were plenty of places to stop and enjoy the view.

GWK Fort Pembroke

After about 5 minutes on the footpath the old building we were heading for came into view. I have since found out that it is Fort Pembroke, it was closed so there’s not much to see up close but the landscape around it is amazing and i’m so glad we found it.

The footpath takes you to Fort Pembroke with the path branching off in different directions. We followed it to the end of the headland with Fort Pembroke on our left and we couldn’t believe the rock formations. Lottie couldn’t wait to start climbing and I was just happy staring at the breathtaking views in all directions. There are so many rocks to climb and a large number of them are not on the edge of the footpath making them safer to climb without fear of a big drop and with little climbs for little legs and more challening climbs for older children (and adults).

I don’t think i’ve ever seen Lottie concetrate so much and she was super proud of herself when she managed some really challenging climbs. It was a first for her as she’s never done anything like this before and she loved it. Nick loved it too!…

After lots of time spent playing on the rocks it was time for us to head back. We followed the footpath back to Pembroke Beach and instead of walking down onto the beach we kept on the footpath which took us into the car park to the left of the Beach House cafe.

This unexpected find will definitely be a place we return to and probably very soon as Lottie kept saying she can’t wait to take Tilly there. Whilst visitng Pembroke we highly recommend taking the footpath, even for those not interested in , as Lottie calls it, ‘real rock climbing’ , the views are well worth the stroll.
