I’m partial to an afternoon tea but it has always been something I have done with a group of girlfriends, never something I have thought of doing as a family. However, that all changed when I realised that The Old Government House Hotel & Spa offers a children’s afternoon tea, so I thought we would give it a try, and is was a big hit with all of us.
The Old Government House Hotel & Spa
The Old Government House Hotel, or OGH as it is referred to by locals, is Guernsey’s only 5 star hotel. Centrally located in St Peter Port with stunning panoramic sea views, it offers breakfast, lunch, daytime snacks, dinner and afternoon tea, so there are lots of options, and it is surprisingly child friendly, and dog friendly for that matter!
Afternoon Tea
Who doesn’t love delicate finger sandwiches, pastries, and freshly baked scones with homemade preserves and Guernsey clotted cream? I certainly do and as it turns out, so do my kids! We were all looking forward to our afternoon tea as it’s not something we have done before as a family, and my girls (both aged 8) felt like they were proper grown ups. You have the choice of sitting inside in the Sir John Coward Lounge or outside in the Olive Grove or Gardens. We were lucky with the weather and sat in the tranquil Olive Grove, the 4 of us and our little dog (who was given a water bowl).
There are a number of afternoon teas on offer at The OGH, from the Deluxe Afternoon Tea (£28pp) to the Champagne Afternoon Tea (38pp) and for children there is the Oggie’s Afternoon Tea (£15 per child 12yrs and under). We all ordered and after a short wait we were all delighted with our towers of food. The lovely waitress explained the selection to both of my girls which added to their excitement at feeling like grown ups!
Along with food, children get a choice of milkshake, hot chocolate or soft drink, so when I thought my girls’ sugar intake couldn’t get any higher, they added a chocolate milkshake to the mix and drank every drop! They also enjoyed cups of tea in the china teacups, pinky fingers at the ready…
Too full to move...
The food was absolutely gorgeous, to the point we all kept eating way past the point of being full!
Thumbs up for families
I can be reluctant to spend a lot of money on kids food when we’re out, as one of my girls often wastes a lot of it, however, this was worth every penny as both my girls ate more than they have ever eaten out. It felt like more of an occasion than just a lunch out, especially as we were there for over 2 hours. The added bonus was the fact that we could take our dog with us and she was well fussed by all of the staff!
I highly recommend the Afternoon Tea at the OGH for families in Guernsey, whether you’re looking for a holiday treat or, like us, for locals who are looking for something a little special.
