A real family favourite and one of the most popular beaches in Guernsey, Cobo offers soft white sand, crystal clear water, great amenities and spectacular sunset views.
Location
Cobo Bay is located on Guernsey’s west coast, on the Cobo Coast Road. There are several parking areas on the coast road and opposite the beach, by Iceland.
The Beach
Cobo beach offers a long sweeping stretch of soft sand and beautiful crystal-clear sea, making it perfect for sunbathing, sandcastles, swimming and beach games. The beach is easily accessible for people thanks to the slipway at each end, and a couple of stairways leading down to the beach, dotted along the sea wall.
Low Tide
At low tide, Cobo delights with a large expanse of soft sand and loads of rock pools to explore. However, if you fancy a paddle, be prepared for the long walk to the waters edge!
Mid-tide is a good time to visit Cobo as you get the best of both worlds, plenty of sand, rocks to explore and easy access to the water.
High Tide
As with many Guernsey beaches, there can be little or no beach remaining at high tide. Thanks to the beautiful sunsets you will often see people sitting on the sea wall, whatever the tide, enjoying the last of the sun and most likely enjoying fish and chips from nearby Cobo Fish Bar!
Facilities
Behind the beach lies Cobo Village, one of few discernible settlements on Guernsey’s West Coast. With a popular pub, hotel, fish and chip shop, kiosk, tea room, village store and small supermarket, you won’t be short of options for food and drinks whilst at Cobo.
Cobo Tea Room
Across the road from the far end of Cobo beach is the Cobo Tea Room, offering a great selection of homemade cakes and snacks, plus hot and cold drinks. There are only a few tables inside the tea room and therefore, it can be hard to find a table in high season.
The Rockmount
The Rockmount is a hugely popular gastro-pub across the road from Cobo beach with a large parking area behind the pub. Known by locals as the ‘Rockie’, The Rockmount is always busy and it’s best to book a table if you want to eat there. The menu caters for all tastes and includes a selection of children’s meals. Children are also given colouring and pencils to keep them occupied.
Cobo Fish Bar
Cobo Fish Bar is extremely popular and for good reason. The food is always excellent, and the service is really efficient. There is no option to eat-in but they have a few seats outside, however, a popular choice is to enjoy them on the beach. They offer food boxes for kids making it easier to eat alfresco.
Don’t be put off by the size of the queue outside the fish bar, they have 3 serving areas so it moves quickly.
Cobo Bay Hotel
Cobo Bay Hotel is a boutique hotel and restaurant situated next to The Rockmount, behind Cobo beach. Throughout the summer a carnival atmosphere is created at Cobo thanks to the Cobo Bay Hotel’s Balcony Gigs. During the gigs, a small section of the coast road is shut, in front of the hotel, and live music pours onto the beach. Events last from 3pm to 7pm and they get extremely busy, full details on the Cobo Bay Hotel website.
You can see why Cobo is a family favourite, and because of that, it can get a lot busier than other beaches on the island. If you’re not one for crowds, then consider another family-friendly beach at the height of summer. One thing for sure is that whenever you visit Cobo, you’ll think you’re in the Caribbean!
